Sit Up Bench Buying Guide

In general, men in particular tend to concentrate on developing their arms and chest muscles while working out as these muscles tend to be the more visible. But lower down, if one has a protruding or chubby abdomen, the overall effect is irrevocably damaged. Women, on the other hand and in general are very conscious about their tummy fat and concentrate on getting rid of the flab around their waist and stomach so that even tight-fitting dresses suit well on them. So, for both men and women, abdominal exercises are important. These are aesthetic reasons for toning, but having good strong core muscles also means you will tend to lead a more health life. Core muscle strength will hugely reduce the risk of back pain in the long term for example.

The traditional method of working on one’s abs is by doing sit ups lying on the floor. But sit ups on a hard floor can be really uncomfortable. Abs exercises are anyway quite difficult and painful. And, if additional discomfort is added to them, then they become really very challenging. With a sit up bench, this discomfort of floor sit ups is completely excluded from one’s abs work out. Sit up benches do not only have a padded back rest, they also have a padded cushion to support and block the feet for additional ease during the exercises.

There are five common features or kinds of sit up benches:

  1. Incline Sit Up Bench or Decline Sit Up Bench: These benches have slanting back rests. In some models, the level of the slant or inclination can be adjusted by the user as per their needs and the level of workout required.
  2. Adjustable Sit Up Bench: In terms of flexibility of usage, these benches are better than the incline/decline option, as they allow one to either adjust the back rest into a slanting position or a flat position. However, some manufacturer’s interchange the terms readily referring to the same kind of functionality in each case.
  3. Folding Bench: These are meant for those homeowners who are short on space or those gym owners who have their gyms choc a bloc with various machines. As the name suggests, these benches can be folded and stored after when your bench sit up workout it over.
  4. Curved Bench: These benches are especially designed for those who have back problems and who want to give more support to their backs while working out on their abdomen. The curved back rest of these benches adjusts to the curves of a person’s back for additional comfort during exercise.
  5. Roman Chair Bench: These are actually multi-purpose benches and are very different from the above four types, as these do not have any back rest. So, the user doesn’t lie or even sit while working out on a roman chair bench. They instead have padded armrests on which one is supposed to support one’s body weight and crunch one’s kegs up.

Sit Up BenchIf you are buying a sit up bench for private use, then any of the first four types would probably suit you more than a roman chair bench. But if you are looking for these benches for your gym, then you should consider including all of these types if your budget allows it so that your clients have maximum choice for their abdominal exercises. In addition to obviously checking the sturdiness and toughness of the bench you plan to buy, you should also check how easy and flexible and yet tightly and strongly structured the adjusting mechanism of the bench is.

They can be bought either from a fitness equipment store or online. With online shopping, one has the advantage of checking out a maximum number of models and products and reviews very quickly. Nonetheless, if possible you should still buy your bench from a reputed company so you would be assured of both quality and good customer service levels. Finally, you should try to look for a model that comes with a good warranty.
