Gym memberships can be expensive and some people simply do not like the idea of working out in front of others and spending the extra time it takes to travel to and from the gym. The answer may be found in owning a weights set.
An Olympic weight set is the most basic of all physical fitness equipment. A set of weights consists of two sets of plates in increments of 2.5 lbs, 10 lbs, 25 lbs, 35 lbs and 45 lbs, as well as four – 5 lbs weights as well as the bar and spring collars. This set usually costs in the range of $400 – $500, though less expensive sets can be purchased from discount stores or during special sports store sales for about half the normal price.
It does not take long before a new weight lifting enthusiast will see the need for a good weight bench set to enhance the workout experience. The rugged benches are designed to provide the user with a variety of positions during the workout, as well as hold the bar carrying the weights between “reps” or “sets.” A good weight bench is made of heavy gauge steel, with an adjustable head rest. The top of the line benches can cost as much as $500 or more, though searching for a store sale can save a significant amount of money. In fact, buying both the bench and the weights set can result in a tremendous savings.
Most pro athletes own and religiously use a weight set as a way of maintaining their bodies for peak performance during the off season of their particular sport. However, the workouts they do are not much different than the workout routines of amateur athletes and even the average health-minded enthusiast interested in staying in good shape. The important thing to remember is consistency – working out on a consistent schedule. A beginner will want to start slowly and with lighter weights, increasing in gradual increments.
Lifting weights not only will build muscle over time, but the intense exercise will soon begin to relieve stress and tension while releasing endorphins into the body. These endorphins, which have often been called “happiness hormones”, give an overall good feeling to both the mind and the body. Many people like a good weight training session in the morning. They say the result is an alert, focused feeling throughout the day combined with a raised level of energy due to the increase in their metabolism. For women, weight lifting not only tones and firms the body, it strengthens bones which can often become weak over time due to the loss of calcium.
From a practical standpoint, people who workout with their own set of weights are saving a lot of time and money. The initial cost of the weights is paid back in short order due to the savings realized by not having to pay those gym membership dues. Generally speaking, people who own their weight sets can see their investment paid back within about one year. There is also a savings of time, since traveling to and from the gym can cut into a busy schedule – not to mention convenience of not having to wait between sets for other members to finish using the equipment.
