Why Get Liability Insurance for Pets?

To a pet owner, your animal may seem like the kindest, sweetest, most docile creature. However, all animals behave unpredictably – even our favorite pets. Because of their wild nature, any pet has the potential to harm a human, even unintentionally. In some cases, they can even cause serious injuries or death.

For this reason, everyone who owns a pet should consider buying liability insurance for pets. Pet insurance decreases the financial risk you as the owner of a pet assume, should your pet hurt a person, another animal, or destroy someone’s property. As a responsible pet owner with insurance, you are protecting both yourself as well as others.

Liability insurance for pets will generally pay out for property damage, injuries sustained or death that has been caused by the policyholder’s pet.

Many homeowner insurance policies are no longer including pet liabilities, especially for pets or breeds known to cause extensive damage. If you happen to have a pet that is on the list of those not covered under your homeowner’s insurance policy, insuring your pet separately is a must.

Fortunately, human deaths caused by pets are uncommon. However, bites, specifically dog bites, are very common among pet insurance claims. Last year, almost a million bites by dogs were reported in the United States.

Liability Insurance for PetsBecause nearly every state holds the owner of a dog responsible for injuries caused by his or her dog, unless someone is trespassing on your property, it is important to carry pet insurance to protect yourself from these costs.

Insuring your pet against liability is highly recommended for owners of large dogs, dangerous breeds and exotic pets of all types.

It is possible, however, to be denied liability coverage for your pet. If your pet has a documented history of biting or attacking, or is of a breed reputed to be violent, it may be difficult for you to obtain pet insurance, or you may even be denied coverage. Neutering your pet, always keeping it on a leash and taking it to obedience training can help you if you are having trouble getting your pet insured.
